Before it was a world-class ski destination, Crested Butte was a rugged coal mining town in the late 1800s. The ski area was founded much later, in 1960, on the slopes of Crested Butte Mountain. Resort Overview

Crested Butte Mountain Resort boasts 1,547 skiable acres of terrain. The summit elevation reaches 12,162 feet, with a vertical drop of 2,775 feet (lift-served). The resort’s layout is naturally divided, with beginner terrain concentrated near the base area, long cruising runs for intermediates in the middle, and the famous expert terrain higher up the mountain. This natural segregation helps keep skier traffic flowing smoothly and safely.

The ski season at Crested Butte Mountain Resort generally runs from late November (around Thanksgiving) through early April, depending on snow conditions. For exact dates, always check the official resort website.

Gunnison-Crested Butte Regional Airport (GUC) is by far the closest and most convenient, only a 40-minute drive away. However, Montrose (MTJ) and Denver (DEN) often have more flight options and can be more affordable, making a pre-booked, reliable shuttle or private car service a fantastic option.
