A Rich History

Founded in 1949 by Alexander Cushing, the resort was thrust onto the world stage when it hosted the 1960 Winter Olympics. This event cemented its reputation for incredible terrain and a vibrant ski culture. The mountain’s spirit is defined by a legacy of freeskiing pioneers and Olympic champions. The 2012 merger with Alpine Meadows and the subsequent renaming to Palisades Tahoe in 2021 created one of North America’s largest ski resorts, now connected by the Base to Base Gondola.

Resort Overview

Palisades Tahoe is massive. It spans 6,000 skiable acres across two mountains, featuring 8 peaks, 16 bowls, and over 270 trails. The base elevation sits at 6,200 feet, climbing to a summit of 9,050 feet. The terrain is famously diverse, with about 25% designated for beginners, 45% for intermediates, and 30% for advanced and expert skiers. Its crown jewel, the KT-22 lift, is often cited as one of the best ski lifts in North America, offering immediate access to expert-level chutes and cliffs.

Squaw Valley Resort Guide & FAQ

In 2021, the resort was officially renamed Palisades Tahoe to honor the heritage of the Washoe Tribe and remove a term considered offensive. While many people still use the old name out of habit, you’ll see Palisades Tahoe used on all official signage, maps, and communications.

Palisades Tahoe boasts one of the longest ski seasons in Lake Tahoe, typically opening around Thanksgiving (mid-to-late November) and often staying open until May, or even later in heavy snow years. For the most current information, always check the official resort website.

There are numerous rental shops right in The Village at Palisades Tahoe, including the official Palisades Tahoe Rental &  Demo Center. You can reserve your gear online in advance, which is highly recommended during peak periods to save time.

Mountain weather can change in an instant. Roads can become icy and snow-packed, and chain controls are common. To avoid the stress, booking a professional transport service is your best bet. Our vehicles are winter-ready, and our drivers are experienced in all mountain conditions, ensuring a safe and hassle-free experience.

Yes! A lift ticket or season pass to Palisades Tahoe grants you access to both mountains. You can ski between them using the Base to Base Gondola, which connects the two base areas in a scenic 16-minute ride.

We highly recommend booking your airport transportation to Squaw Valley as soon as you have your flight and lodging details confirmed. This is especially important for travel during holidays and peak weekends (December–March) to ensure availability and secure the best rate.
