Telluride was founded in 1878 as a booming silver and gold mining camp. For decades, it was a rugged, isolated outpost. The Telluride Ski Resort officially opened in 1972, with five lifts and a day lodge, signaling a new era for the town. A pivotal development came in 1996 with the completion of the gondola, the first and only free public transportation system of its kind in the country.
