A Brief History

Vail was founded by Pete Seibert, a veteran of the U.S. Army’s 10th Mountain Division, and local rancher Earl Eaton. After scouting the terrain in 1957, they were captivated by the massive bowls and endless skiing potential. The resort officially opened in December 1962 with one gondola, two chairlifts, and a $5 lift ticket. From these humble beginnings, it rapidly grew into the behemoth it is today, setting the standard for the modern American ski resort experience with innovations in snowmaking, grooming, and high-speed lift technology.

Vail Resort Guide & FAQ

The core season runs from late December through early March, offering the most reliable snow conditions and full operational capacity. For fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation costs, consider visiting in early December or late March. Spring skiing in April can be fantastic, with sunny skies and softer snow.

Vail’s ski season typically begins in mid-November and concludes in mid-to-late April. These dates are always dependent on snow conditions. For the most current information, please check the official Vail Resort website.

It is highly recommended. You can rent high-quality equipment directly at the resort in Vail Village or Lionshead, or from numerous rental shops in the town of Vail. Booking online in advance often secures better rates and guarantees availability, especially during peak holiday periods.

Vail is on the Epic Pass system. The best value is purchasing an Epic Pass product well in advance of the season. For single or multi-day lift tickets, it is always most affordable to buy them online at least seven days prior to your arrival. Buying tickets at the window on the day of is the most expensive option.

We strongly recommend booking your Vail transportation as soon as your flights and accommodation are confirmed. Holiday weeks (Christmas, New Year’s, Presidents’ Day) and popular weekends fill up very quickly. Booking early ensures vehicle availability and gives you the best choice of private or shared services.

This is a key reason travelers choose Rock2Rocks. The I-70 mountain corridor can be treacherous in winter. Our professional drivers are experienced in navigating adverse mountain conditions. Our vehicles are equipped with appropriate snow tires and are maintained to the highest safety standards, providing you with a safe, reliable, and stress-free transport to the resort.

We often have special pricing available for larger groups and midweek travel, which tends to be less busy. For the most accurate and up-to-date pricing on a group Vail bus or private van, please contact us directly with your travel dates and group size.
