A Little History

The dream of hosting a Winter Olympics sparked the development of Whistler Mountain, which officially opened for skiing in 1966. Its neighbor, Blackcomb Mountain, opened in 1980, creating a friendly rivalry that pushed both mountains to innovate. In 1997, the two resorts merged to create the largest ski area in North America. This spirit of ambition culminated in the resort co-hosting the 2010 Winter Olympics and Paralympics, cementing its status on the world stage. The game-changing PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola, connecting the two mountains, was completed in 2008, fundamentally changing how visitors experience the vast terrain.

Whistler Blackcomb Resort Guide & FAQ

The ski season typically runs from late November to late April. For peak snow conditions and deep powder, visit between January and March. For warmer, sunnier days and lively spring skiing, March and April are fantastic.

Whistler Blackcomb has numerous official rental locations at the base of both mountains and in Whistler Village. You can book your gear online in advance for a discount and to save time. Many independent shops in the village also offer excellent rental services.

It’s highly recommended to purchase your lift passes online, well in advance of your trip. The Epic Pass and Epic Day Pass often provide the best value, but you can also buy single-day or multi-day lift tickets directly from the Whistler Blackcomb website. Prices are always lower online than at the ticket window.

Whistler Village is pedestrian-only and easily walkable. For travel between the main village, Creekside, and other neighborhoods, a free and efficient village shuttle bus system operates daily. Once our transportation to Whistler Blackcomb drops you off, you likely won’t need a car.
