History

The Aspen ski story began in 1946 when Friedl Pfeifer, a veteran of the 10th Mountain Division, worked with Walter and Elizabeth Paepcke to launch the Aspen Skiing Company. They installed the world’s longest chairlift at the time, Chair 1, on Aspen Mountain, and a legend was born. From these ambitious beginnings, Aspen grew to encompass four distinct mountains, each acquired or developed to add a unique flavor to the overall resort experience.
