History

The story of Snowbird began with the vision of Ted Johnson, a passionate skier who saw the potential in Little Cottonwood Canyon’s steep terrain and deep powder. He partnered with Texas oilman and rancher Dick Bass, and in December 1971, Snowbird opened to the public. The resort’s centerpiece, the Aerial Tram, was there from day one, establishing Snowbird’s commitment to big-mountain access. Over the decades, the resort has expanded with new lifts, lodging, and amenities, including the addition of the Summit Lodge on Hidden Peak, but it has always retained the adventurous spirit of its founders.

Overview

Snowbird is a giant. The resort covers 2,500 acres of skiable terrain with a staggering 3,240-foot vertical drop. The base sits at 7,760 feet, and the summit of Hidden Peak tops out at an impressive 11,000 feet. This high elevation is key to the quantity and quality of its snow. The terrain is famously skewed toward more advanced skiers, with 35% rated for advanced/experts. However, with 27% beginner terrain and 38% intermediate runs, there are plenty of groomers and learning areas for those still finding their ski legs. Finding the right transport to Snowbird is the first step to accessing this incredible mountain.

Snowbird Resort Guide & FAQ

For the deepest powder and most reliable conditions, plan your trip between mid-January and late March. However, Snowbird is known for having one of the longest seasons in Utah, often running from mid-November through May, so spring skiing can be fantastic with sunny skies and softer snow.

The resort typically opens around Thanksgiving week in November and often stays open until Memorial Day in May, weather and conditions permitting. Always check the official Snowbird website for the most current operational dates.

Equipment rentals are conveniently available right at the resort. You can find rental shops at the Snowbird Center (Christy Sports), Creekside, and inside The Cliff Lodge, offering everything from beginner packages to high-performance demo gear.

Snowbird is on the Mountain Collective Pass and is also included on the Ikon Pass and Ikon Base Pass (with some blackout dates and limitations). It is not on the Epic Pass. You can also purchase day tickets or multi-day passes directly from the resort, with discounts often available for advance online purchases.

We highly recommend booking your transfers to Snowbird at least 72 hours in advance, especially during peak periods like holidays (Christmas, New Year’s, and President’s Day) and weekends. This ensures vehicle availability and gives you peace of mind.

Little Cottonwood Canyon has a traction law, meaning vehicles must have 4WD/AWD or chains during storms. Our entire fleet is equipped for winter conditions, and our professional drivers are highly experienced in navigating mountain roads safely. Booking a professional transportation service to Snowbird like ours eliminates the stress and risk of driving a rental car in a snowstorm.

We often have special rates available for larger groups or for travel during less busy midweek days. Exact information is not available online – please contact us directly for a custom quote for your group.
